What is a learning management system?

A learning management system or LMS is a software solution for administration, documentation, tracking. It incorporates reporting, and delivery of educational courses, training programmes, or learning and development programmes.

What is the purpose of LMS?

The main objective of learning management systems is to enhance and strengthen the knowledge and skills of users through a learning process. The use of an LMS can motivate learners through the ability to offer interactivity through quizzes, for example. The LMS not only delivers content, but also handles registering courses, course administration, tracking, and reporting.

How does an LMS work?

A learning management system is a straight forward platform for both users and administrators. An employee simply logs into an LMS with their own personalised username and password to begin their assigned online training. This can be done from any internet connected device.  After completing the training, the employee can choose to take the quizzes or tests associated with the training material to validate their learning and receive certification.

The LMS itself will track the progress of each individual employee, allowing administrators to see how well the employees are progressing through the course content, who has already qualified, and who has not yet taken the training.

An LMS is used to support learning. This is done by providing a platform where training content, certification and other documentation can be stored and organised. The platform also allows for assessments to be given, and interaction between employees and employers and/or students and teachers using blogs, forums, etc.

Who can benefit from using an LMS?

There are a variety of people that make use of learning management systems. The most common being that of HR departments, to provide training to employees and managers. Organisations usually use LMS courses to advance employee skills and development or as a requirement to promote them. Colleges and universities are another group that make use of a learning management systems.  This can be used to both deliver online courses to off-site students and deliver blended learning.

What are the benefits of using an LMS over classroom-based training?

Some of the benefits of using an LMS include having all learning content in one central location, while easily tracking learner progression and performance.  It ensures consistency while significantly reducing learning and development costs and time. Learning management systems also assist in keeping organisations up to date with compliance regulations.

How Online Training Can Improve Employee Engagement →

online training employee engagement

Research suggests it is imperative that management engage their employees with their tasks and work projects. SHRM research indicates that engaged employees are more productive, innovative and therefore receive better results; strengthening an organisation for a better culture and competitive advantage. Monetary incentives are becoming less likely to motivate employees. Personal growth, increased career opportunities and ongoing development are at the forefront of what employees truly desire. According to the National Research Business Institute, 23% of employees are leaving their current roles due to lack of development and training. Many organisations are not providing enough opportunity for growth.

The question that management should be asking is ‘how do we address this challenge?’. The answer is simple, give employees what they crave in terms of development. This is where online training or e-learning comes into effect. Online learning provides interesting, relevant, and interactive content, that supports career opportunities and ongoing development.  Unlike that of classroom-based training, online training offers employees training that can be accessed everywhere, any time, on a variety of devices. It allows employees to complete the training at their own pace. This eliminates any worry about moving at the speed of a class. As well as the content benefiting employees in terms development, this also allow for an interactive and immersive form of learning. This, in turn allows for a more engaged employee!
